The History of The Dalles House Supper Club & Lounge

A Legacy of Hospitality Since the 1800s

The rich history of The Dalles House Supper Club & Lounge dates back to the 1800s, making it a cherished landmark in the St. Croix River Valley.

The Early Years: Steamboat ‘Round the Bend’

In 1939, a man named Jim Miller Sr. owned the property and established a business called Steamboat ‘Round the Bend’. In 1942, Jim was called into duty for World War II, leading to the temporary closure of the establishment. After bravely serving his country, he returned home in 1945 and reopened the business.

The Evolution of The Dalles House

The original Dalles House stood in Taylors Falls, MN, until it was torn down in 1954. However, with an inn and restaurant existing in the Falls area since the 1800s, we were fortunate to carry on the Dalles House name.

In 1957, a devastating flood destroyed many homes, along with the Dalles House Restaurant, Lounge, and Hotel. Just a few years later, in 1965, a fire caused further damage. Renowned commercial architect Al Sveson was hired to oversee the restoration. During this time, Jim Miller Jr. designed the beautiful Dalles House Courtyard, featuring large trees, lush perennials, and a striking limestone water feature.

By 1968, the lower-level bowling alley was closed and repurposed into a Banquet Facility, allowing The Dalles House to host its first large wedding reception—a tradition that continues today.

Growth & Transformation Through the Decades

The Dalles House has undergone multiple transformations:

  • 1970s: The hotel was sold as a separate entity, and it remains independently owned today.

  • 1982: Another fire destroyed part of the Lounge and Restaurant, leading to the Art Deco-style design that defines our space today.

  • 1991: Bob Clark redesigned the courtyard, incorporating trap rock and a waterfall installation, which extended indoors for a unique aesthetic.

  • 2005: Sonya Fry and the Balejs revitalized The Dalles House, turning it into a Western Wisconsin hot spot for dining, live music, and private events.

  • 2010: A lounge patio was added.

  • 2016: A renovation refreshed the Lounge and main-level restrooms.

  • 2021: A pergola and new dining area were constructed.

  • 2024: The main dining room and Supper Club were redecorated to enhance the Art Deco supper club ambiance.

Expanding Our Culinary Experience

In 2012, Sonya Fry expanded the Dalles House experience by opening Dalles Café & Coffee House in downtown St. Croix Falls, serving scratch-made breakfast and craft espresso drinks.

Today, the Dalles House Supper Club & Lounge remains a pillar of fine dining, catering, and private events in the St. Croix River Valley.
